Last January I was setting foot in Europe for the first time, trying to acclimate myself to a completely new environment. I was meeting lots of new people; people whom I would go on to become close with and have the some of my best memories with.
Hell, I fell in love with Spain so much during my spring semester last year that I made a trip back there this past winter break.
Now, this spring, I’m back at UNC. But for some reason, it didn’t really feel like I was here for the first few weeks.
- Maybe it’s because I missed the first week of the semester as a result of my winter break trip.
- Maybe it’s because I didn’t finish my last final exam from December until last week.
- Maybe it’s because I was trying to get a job application submitted and approved.
Or maybe it’s because I’ve completely reached the point where I’m tired of school and can’t wait to graduate….
It’s true. I am anticipating the day that I am finally done with school and I can move on to chase my next goals and dreams. But sometimes that anticipation blocks my view of what I have right now.
As I was walking back from Davis Library on Monday night, it hit me. This isn’t just another typical semester at UNC. This is it.
Those walks back from the library to my dorm have been replaced with drives back to my off-campus house. These dining halls that I used to go in all the time used to be filled with familiar faces, but now they are filled with strangers. I only really go to Carroll when I go to campus now, and when I go to other parts of campus it feels unusual. Students actually call Rams dining hall, Chase! It’s crazy.
I may feel like a stranger at UNC sometimes, but I still have a semester to call it mine.
I still have time to live with and see my best friends everyday at our amazing house! I can experience another Carolina March Madness! I can still win an intramural shirt! I can be a part of another Gary Kayye class! Spring weather at UNC? Yes please! Maybe I can rush franklin one more time (knock on wood) or participate in the Dance Marathon or any of the other amazing UNC traditions! I can still make the most out of my time left at the school I love.
So I’ll save my reminiscing for later (plus I also gotta pass Media Law and Carolina Week first) and enjoy this (hopefully) last semester as a college student.
